How does an air source heat pump work?

1. The outside air is pumped through a heat exchanger.
Although it’s much cooler than the temperature inside your home, it’s still warm enough to cause a refrigerant liquid to evaporate and turn into gas.

2. The gas pressure is increased using a compressor.
This causes the temperature of the gas to rise – and the heat created by compressing this gas is transferred into your central heating and hot water system.

3. The refrigerant gas then cools
When the gas returns to liquid form, the cycle starts again.

Air Source Heat Pumps: all you need to know

How much will an air source heat pump cost?

Each installation varies but you can get an indicative cost by using our online cost calculator here. For an accurate quote specific to your property, you can book in a visit with one of our surveyors.

Will I be eligible for a boiler upgrade government grant?

Specific stipulations are laid down by the government for a heat pump or biomass boiler upgrade grant – to qualify you must meet the following criteria:

  • Live in England or Wales
  • Own your property (whether this is a home or a small non domestic property)
    • Private landlords and second home owners are eligible
  • Have an installation capacity of up to 45kWh (this covers most properties)
  • Have an energy performance certificate (EPC) with no outstanding recommendations for loft or cavity wall insulation.
    • A current EPC will be provided after a survey of the property is completed.
  • You can still apply if you’ve received separate funding for energy efficiency upgrades such as insulation doors or windows.

Excluded properties include:

  • Social housing (there is different funding available for social housing)
  • New build properties (with the exception of some self-builds)
  • Properties that have already had government funding or support for a heat pump or biomass boiler

For more information, visit the government grant scheme information page here.

Do I need to insulate my home ?

To get the maximum benefit from an air source heat pump, reducing the rate of heat loss from your home is important. We have a network of specialists who can provide complementary services such as insulation – however there is no obligation to insulate your home prior to arranging your air source heat pump installation.

If you do choose to insulate your home ahead of installing your heat pump, we can coordinate the fitting of your heat pump around your insulation.

Will I save money on my energy bills ?

If it is designed, installed and operated appropriately, an air source heat pump can facilitate a reduction in energy bills. However, each property is different, so our experts at Heat Pump Life can forecast the energy consumption for each application in your home.

Additionally, heat pumps support carbon emission reduction by using less fossil fuels. Every unit of electricity used by a heat pump generates three units of heat when used effectively.

Do I need to change my radiators?

It is likely that you will need to change at least some of the radiators in your home. The actual number will be determined at the survey visit but the indicative cost calculation assumes that 50% of your radiators will be replaced.

What outdoor space do I need?

The maximum space required for an air source heat pump is 600mm (2 feet) deep, 1200mm (4 feet) wide and 1500mm (5 feet) high. Most installations will be 600mm (2 feet) deep, 900mm (3 feet) wide and 1200mm (4 feet) high.

Is an air source heat pump noisy?

Noise levels from an air source heat pump normally register between 40-60 decibels – the same as a modern condensing combi boiler, the hum of a standard refrigerator, the sound produced by an air conditioning unit, or the low-level noise of a quiet library

Can you install a ground source heat pump for me?

No, we do not currently install this type of equipment.
